Techniques used in book
Of Mice And Men is communicated really effectively due to there being many techniques used to help the reader make a connection with the text better. The use of foreshadowing in this text has been tremendous as lots of different parts in the book have used it. An example of this is when goerge kills lennie, this is foreshadowed by the killing of candys dog as candy told goerge that he should of been the one to shoot his dog. this is foreshadowing goerge killing lennie as the others were all looking for lennie so that they could kill him, like candys dog goerge believed he should be the one to do so the others dont. this technique is effective as it allow the reader to develop a deeper connection with the text as they need to explore the link bettwen the two events themselfs allowing them to learn more and understand the text better. this helps to communicate the idea that there are always problems in life and like candy we should let other people fix it for us but do it ouself with respect that way we can truely feel happy as goerge would have felt good if one of them found lennie and killed him. contrast also plays a role in how we persive the text as the contrast between goerge and lennie makes there differnces more noticiable and so also acts like an exaduration of there personalities. some of the contast's are lennie is big and tough but goerge is much smaller, but goerge is quite smart when compared to lennie which has the mind of a 4-5 year old, you also see contast in there personalities as goerge is incharges tells lennie what to do and how to do it whilst lennie on the other hand is relient on goerge to tell him what to do and has nearly no say in what they do. this is effective because it makes there differences a lot more noticable like if lennie had been friends with another lennie-like charicter he would not have looked as strong or as mentaly disabled as when you compare them you find not many differences and so is perscieved as a more normal thng as then there is a difference you have something to compare to and say wow look at how strong lennie is compared to goerge and the other guys.
There are many techniques used in this text including - Contrast, foreshadowing, similies, personification, metaphores and coloquial language.
Foreshadowing- when candy's dog gets shot and candy sais to goerge that he should of shot the dog himself: this shows us that goerge is going to shot lennie himself so goerge doesnt feel the same as candy.
Contrast- Lennie and goerge: contrast between size and their mental ability
- Lennie's last name (small) and his size (big and strong)
Simile- "Suddenly Lennie appeared out of the brush, and he came as silently as a creeping bear moves.": compares him to a bear because of his charicteristics
-" Curley was flopping like a fish on a line.": helps the viewer visualise the fight abd the differences in their strenght and size.
personification- "The shade climbed up the hills toward the top.": it gives human charicteristics to the shade to make it sound more drematic or interesting.
Metaphore- "He was a jerkline skinner, prince of the ranch.": this is reffering to slim as a very important or respected charicted of the men.
Coloquial language- it is used throughout the entire book to give the viewer context of the time and place that they were in and shows you how they spoke at the time.
